Here's what nutrition ...Rice bran oil vs olive oil. Here's what nutrition expert Catherine Saxelby (www.foodwatch.com.au) says.

"Rice bran oil is a healthy oil and compares well to olive oil except for the cold-pressing which I’ll cover later.

Much of the advertising for this oil says it’s "The World's Healthiest" edible oil but in reality it’s similar to other oils, there’s only a couple of points of difference over other oils.

First its composition. Like other liquid oils, it is free of trans fats and relatively low in saturated fat (20%), although not as low as canola (8%) or olive oil (14%). It contains 32% polyunsaturates and 40% monounsaturated which makes it similar in composition to cottonseed or sesame oil. This alone will ensure that it lowers cholesterol as other oils do.

What makes it stand out? It’s high in oryzanol and tocotrienols. Other oils don’t have much of these two.

Oryzanol (technically gamma-orynanol) is a natural plant sterol which has been shown to block the absorption of cholesterol into the body. It acts like the cholesterol-lowering margarines such as Logicol and Pro-activ which are approved by Australia's Heart Foundation.

Tocotrienols are a group of related fat-soluble compounds that are converted into vitamin E which is a well-researched antioxidant for the heart. They’re a form of the vitamin that has been less widely researched than the more well-known alpha-tocopherol form. While corn, wheatgerm and soybeans contain tocopherols, tocotrienols are found in palm and rice bran oils (as well as barley, oats).

In the kitchen, rice bran oil is very stable and makes a good frying oil. It has a high smoke point so you can cook at higher temperatures without it breaking down. Remember it’s refined and stabilized and it’s often the case that the more refined the oil the higher the smoke point.

This is where extra virgin olive oil has the edge – it’s cold-pressed, so no heat is used which retains the natural antioxidants and vitamins. It’s more ‘natural’ which appeals to many these days. However it’s not a great choice for cooking especially at high temperatures and many cooks tell me that it tends to ruin their non-stick pans (something I’ve noticed too).

So if you have to eat a heart healthy diet, rice bran oil would be good to buy for stir-frying and sautéing at high heat while you reserve your extra virgin olive oil for salad and splashing over cooked vegetables – as the Italians do.

In Australia, rice bran oil is sold under the Alfa One brand.GI Grouphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07609354784645028388noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13473599.post-75333621491488890472008-09-03T08:18:00.000+10:002008-09-03T08:18:00.000+10:00Re Sweden and beans and peas, here's what Dr Antig...Re Sweden and beans and peas, here's what Dr Antigone Kouris says:
"In the 1990s, we (that is Monash researchers along with our overseas collaborators) studied the foods habits of elderly people from countries well known for their longevity. The study therefore included Swedes, Japanese, Greeks and Australians. We interviewed elderly participants about current and past/traditional food intake. It was during this interview process with the elderly Swedes that we identified peas and beans as being traditional Swedish foods."GI Grouphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07609354784645028388noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13473599.post-82604398482371601942008-09-03T01:08:00.000+10:002008-09-03T01:08:00.000+10:00A lesser known benefit of the Mediterranean diet i...A lesser known benefit of the Mediterranean diet is that it seems to prevent some cases of lung disease such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and may improve asthma control. I blogged about this about a month ago:
http://advancedmediterraneandiet.com/blog/?p=60

Don't forget that the diet also reduces the incidence of dementia.

For those interested in losing weight Mediterrranean-style, I published a free program at my blog yesterday:
http://advancedmediterraneandiet.com/blog/?p=66

At the start of your blog entry you mention the DIRECT study done in Israel. The Mediterranean diet used therein is based on Walter Willett's book, "Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy." It is reasonably priced at Amazon.com.

-SteveAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13473599.post-81192983600513866312008-09-02T18:50:00.000+10:002008-09-02T18:50:00.000+10:00Glad you like our Food for Thought this month and ...Glad you like our Food for Thought this month and thank you for the compliments. Good fats, antioxidants, choleterol lowering effects, etc. I think it sound pretty good by what I have read on the labels, and have been using both in my cooking.
